Last Sunday we went to the mission farewell and to the open house for my son’s best friend. J (soon to be Elder J) is leaving on his mission in less than a week. Two interesting things happened at the open house:
- I ate too many mint brownies. (Mmmm.)
- My son and his friends made a list of things they wanted to do together before J left on his mission. The list included ordering 50 chicken nuggets for $9.99, eating hot fudge sundaes, going golfing, and playing basketball and football.
It made me wonder, what’s on my list? What are some of the things I want to do before I leave this life for the next one?
I do have some short-term plans. For instance, I’m going to:
- Vacuum up all the dog hair in the house.
- Lose at least 25 pounds by yesterday so that I wouldn’t have had to put my actual weight on my renewed driver’s license.
- Find a good recipe for mint brownies. With zero calories. Where the zero-calorie brownies won’t taste like cardboard.
I also have a list of things I’d like to NEVER EVER spend another minute doing, but might do again anyway:
- Clean the house
- Work in the yard
- Update my Facebook status
But long-term plans? Well, I’d like to…
- Travel. My first choice: England. I’d love to visit the lands from whence came the likes of Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Douglas Adams, my great, great grandparents, and Dr. Who. (Technically, Dr. Who was born in Gallifrey. But he has a British accent, so he qualifies.) And while I’m on that side of the world, I might as well go to Scotland and Ireland because, you know, I’d already be there.
- Write my life story. If I have to suffer through my life, it should all be written down on paper so that my posterity will be forced to read it. And write a book report on it. My story will be poignantly beautiful but tragic, with brief moments of hilarity, and then a happy ending. And it will all be true, except for the parts that are not.
- Win a million dollars on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. I can’t do this myself because I strategically answer “c” to every question, but my husband will win it. He always gets the high score in the home version.
- With the money we win, start a foundation to end world hunger. This will in no way involve feeding people broccoli smoothies or zero-calorie mint brownies that taste like cardboard.
- Buy a lakeside cabin in the woods where I will become an eccentric but good-natured recluse. But I won’t be alone. I will be surrounded by my family, my dogs, and lots of good books. And, of course, I’ll have cable tv and high-speed internet access (because I’m just going to be eccentric–not crazy).
So, what’s on your bucket list? What are some of your short or long-term plans for the future? And do you know how to make zero-calorie mint brownies that don’t taste like cardboard? Please share.

I’m just going to ditto your list. Is that ok? Except for the cabin part – I would rather have the big haunted mansion on the corner to live my eccentric days in. it just sounds like more fun, and I’m allergic to nature anyway. Oh, and I’m not going to solve world hunger with my winnings….not that world hunger isn’t a big deal, and sure I feel sad, but I have to buy that haunted mansion remember? They don’t come cheap.
When you find that brownie recipe, or figure a way to lose weight as of yesterday, please tell the world. We want to know.
I will as go ditto, on the England, Ireland visit. Oh and Scotland, because the best Doctor Whos are Scottish and hide their accents. I would also like to win a million dollars only I think Deal or No Deal is the way to go. The cabin sounds good, but maybe make it somewhere in the Caribbean. I would get there on a Disney Cruise. In my dream travel plans I would also include Australia.
And last, but not least I would like to own a ranch in the middle of nowhere.
You are a very funny girl. (I have been to England. Best week of my life and it wasn’t just because my husband and kids got left at home.)
All the parts of hilarity would be because of your kids. We make your life more exciting! By the way you are not taking Graham with you I will not allow it so good luck with having the dogs with you. Maybe you can have him if I am up there but we will have to see about that…
Oh goodness. I have had this conversation with Hunky Hubby quite a few times (he has a great and long list). I have nothing. Nothing. I cannot think of a thing that I want to do. I am sooooo boring. Ugh! But at least I think you may have inspired my next blog post… “What should be on NatureGirl’s bucket list?” Good start to your own BTW.
Right now my main goal is to not go insane. With three small kids that will be quite a feat, but I’m determined! I like to repeat to myself, “Don’t go crazy, don’t go crazy…” but that doesn’t really work. Hmmm. Next! In my spare time I like to pursue my organ studies (insert snicker here- the laugh, not the chocolate). It’s going slowly but surely and someday I would like a degree in organ performance. Until then, I am content taking lessons and practicing when I can.
Oh, and no ideas on the brownies. Sugar and fat are so delicious together! Good luck, though!
Well I think its time you take your England trip.. I will watch the little kids, and then you can go explore the land of Europe/England.
I made a pretty big list…but it is better to dream and miss some rather than not try at all!
