Sunday afternoon I took a nap and left my kids unsupervised for three hours. Guess what they did?
They quietly studied their scriptures while highlighting all the important passages, of course.
And then they did (reverent) activities to pass off Scouting and Personal Progress requirements.
In my dreams.
In reality, my 12 year old daughter and 14 year old son had been baking cookies.
They made SEVEN dozen cookies: two dozen chocolate cake cookies, two dozen coconut type cookies, and three dozen sugar cookies. And we still had chocolate chip cookies left over from the last time the 14 year old made cookies. Yes, that’s right: we now had about EIGHT dozen cookies.
(But I’m sure they made the cookies to fulfill a Personal Progress/Scouting requirement. Right?! Right?!)
My husband suggested we give some cookies away to the neighbors. Why not? We had enough cookies to spread Good Will to the whole neighborhood. Twice. Eventually, our cookies would become like zucchini– people would have to lock their car doors to keep from finding cookies in their cars when they came out of church.
But we were apparently too tired/busy/lazy/selfish to deliver cookies because, other than the girl who asked my 16 year old to Preference, nobody in the neighborhood got any.
On Monday the kids went to school. I was left home alone with the cookies. They knew my name. They called to me. They were delicious.
By Thursday all but a dozen or so of the cookies had been eaten. (This includes the original chocolate chip cookies.) The thought that I (and my family) had gobbled around six dozen cookies in five days would have made me sick, except that I was hoping to get a spot in the record books for Consuming the Most Amount of Cookies in the Shortest Amount of Time. Or, maybe the record for Most Gluttonous.
Still, there’s half a pumpkin pie left in the fridge from Thanksgiving. This has nothing to do with the cookie story, but it proves we have real willpower when it comes to avoiding sweets.
I suppose I need to teach my kids how to make whole wheat bread. Because if they have to bake something, it would be better if they made something healthy and nutritious.
After all, Sunday is just two days away and I plan on taking another nap. This time, I could wake up to 16 dozen cookies. And since we only need six dozen for ourselves, we will still have about 10 dozen left to share.
Would you like to be my neighbor?
